A fire broke out on the roof of the historic Spice Bazaar in the Eminönü district in the heart of Istanbul, sparking panic among those who witnessed the incident, which was filmed from the air by a drone as firefighters proceeded to extinguish the flames.
Turkish media reported that the fire broke out in the upper part of the bazaar – one of the most visited by tourists in Istanbul – at around 10 a.m. local time, possibly from a chimney; after the fire was reported, all staff and customers were immediately evacuated from the bazaar, while firefighters were alerted and were able to put out the fire in a short time, fortunately before it spread and reached a larger scale.
The mayor of Istanbul’s Fatih district, Ergün Turan, went to the scene of the incident and in statements to the press confirmed that the fire in the Spice Bazaar – which in 2018 reopened its doors after several years of restoration – was caused by one of the structure’s chimneys, pending the results of the investigation launched. “There are no injuries, and there is no significant damage to the structure,” Turan added.
