Turkey, attack on the consulate of Sweden in Izmir

One person seriously injured in attack on Swedish consulate in Turkey

A gunman left one person seriously injured in an attack on the honorary consulate of Sweden in the city of İzmir (Izmir), on Turkey‘s west coast; the victim is a Turkish employee of the consulate itself, who was taken to the hospital and is in critical condition, according to the governor of the province, who identified the woman as Emine T. The attacker, who was arrested after the incident, has been identified as an individual of foreign nationality and “mentally unstable” whose residence is registered in eastern Turkey. For now it is unknown if there is any kind of political motivation behind the attack; Turkish media reported that the incident may rather be related to a dispute over a visa application. The event also occurs in the midst of criticism from Turkey to the Swedish government after the latter authorized a new burning of the Quran.
