Istanbul, Taksim Mosque inaugurated

New Taksim Mosque inaugurated in Istanbul

Today, Friday, the new Taksim Mosque was inaugurated in Istanbul; its works began in 2017 after decades of legal disputes and financing problems. With a capacity for 4,000 worshippers, it is located next to the entrance to İstiklal Avenue and in front of the new Atatürk Cultural Centre, still under construction. Designed in an art deco style and with an innovative construction technique, the mosque has been financed by several businessmen; it has a digital library and a cultural centre with an exhibition hall. Plans to build a mosque in Taksim began in the 1950s, but some historians date them back to the early 1900s; in 1994 Erdoğan, recently elected mayor of Istanbul, promised that the mosque would be built.
