Turkish police seized a cache of unprocessed rough diamonds, including a 61.38-carat piece with an estimated market value of $1 million, during a raid yesterday in Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar, after receiving a tip-off about the presence of smuggled diamonds in the historic bazaar. Following an investigation involving several undercover police officers, 4 people of Syrian nationality were arrested. As reported by the Turkish press, the diamond had been brought into the country illegally from Africa. This is one of the largest diamond seizures in Turkish history.
