The Turkish metropolis of Istanbul, as part of the Dijital Istanbul (‘Digital Istanbul’) project, has installed information panels with QR codes in almost 600 historic mosques in the city, providing useful tourist information about the details and history of the buildings.
Turkish media reported that the initiative is part of the first phase of the Dijital Istanbul project launched by the Istanbul Governorate last January, and includes the installation of panels with QR codes at the entrance to 597 historic mosques in the city. By scanning these codes with their mobile phones, tourists and visitors will immediately obtain written information and an audio explanation about the historical, cultural and architectural features of the site.
The content is available in five languages: Turkish, English, German, Russian and Arabic, and can also be viewed on the project website, which has been created to enable both domestic and foreign tourists to quickly and easily obtain valuable information about the monuments and historical heritage of Istanbul from their own smartphones, without having to download any apps.
The panels with QR codes – similar to those installed last year at Hagia Sophia – are located at the entrance to the mosques and are designed to be scanned from a distance of up to 60 metres. The second phase of the Dijital Istanbul project will include the installation of this tourist information system in 226 mausoleums in Istanbul classified as historical monuments.
