Istanbul: footage captures ferry crashing into a mansion on the Bosphorus

A passenger ferry collided with a mansion and a boat moored in front of it on the banks of the Bosphorus near the district of Üsküdar, on the Asian side of Istanbul. Both the house and the boat sustained damage, although there were no casualties. The accident was recorded second by second by a security camera.

According to the Turkish news agency DHA, the incident took place on 6 October at around 10.30 pm, opposite a mansion situated on the shore at Vaniköy, near the Vaniköy Street pier in the Istanbul neighbourhood of Kandilli.

Footage from a security camera shows the ferry approaching at full speed and first striking a boat moored in front of the mansion, before subsequently crashing into the mansion’s jetty. Due to the force of the collision, it took some time for the boat to come to a halt.

The impact caused the ferry to veer towards the side of the mansion’s pier and knock down its railings. Subsequently, the footage shows the ship reversing and heading back out to sea.

The collision caused damage to the mansion and the pier

Following the maritime accident, the mansion’s residents rushed outside in a state of panic. Fortunately, no one was injured, although damage was caused both to the jetty area of the property and to the boat.

Derin Mermerci, a Turkish businesswoman who lives in the mansion, posted a message about the incident on her social media account, explaining that the ferry crashed into her house on the Bosphorus “whilst I was sitting at home, just about to go to bed”, and praised the work of the police in Istanbul: “They’re incredible. There’s no one better than our police. They’re fantastic. They arrived in 14 minutes,” she said.
