In addition to the iconic Orient Express, there is another equally famous ‘Orient Express’ in Turkey that is growing in popularity among both Turkish and foreign tourists, especially among university students; not because it travels through distant countries in luxurious carriages… But because it passes through the impressive snowy landscapes of Anatolia during the winter.
It is the Doğu Ekspresi (‘Orient Express’ in Turkish), a train belonging to the State Railways of Turkey (TCDD) network that connects the capital Ankara with the eastern city of Kars. Until a few years ago a relatively unknown route (the average age of travellers was 50, and demand was so low that the route was about to be cancelled), since it became a viral phenomenon on social networks it has become so popular that tickets are sold out months in advance and additional wagons and convoys had to be provided, including an Orient Express for tourists.
The first trip of this season of the tourist Orient Express departed on 23 December from Ankara to Kars, covering a route of 1,360 km and lasting 26 hours with 53 stations, which also includes some long-duration stops in Erzincan, Erzurum and Sivas. In this video you can see beautiful images from the air captured by a drone of the train crossing the province of Erzincan, in a snowy landscape impressively coloured white by the snow.
