Sinan Oğan, the candidate who obtained 5% of the votes in the first round of the presidential elections in Turkey, and who announced his decision to support Erdoğan in the second round of elections a few days ago, declared last night during an interview with the Turkish public TV channel TRT that the opposition candidate, Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, should be grateful to him for giving him the chance to continue in the presidential race. “I would like to remind Mr. Kılıçdaroğlu that if he can go to the second round today, it is thanks to Sinan Oğan,” Oğan said, responding to criticism leveled at him by Kılıçdaroğlu for giving his support to Erdoğan.
Asked precisely about his decision to support the current Turkish president in the second round, Oğan explained that Kılıçdaroğlu had not convinced him at all that he would win the elections, adding that the exclusion of the HDP (which is running in these elections as the Green Left Party, and which is accused of links to the PKK terrorist group) of the future government of Kılıçdaroğlu “was my red line, but unfortunately I did not get any concrete answer about it”. Sinan Oğan also pointed out that another reason for supporting Erdoğan was the fact that it is his AKP party that has the majority in parliament: “it is the most natural thing to support whoever has the majority” to avoid a political crisis, he declared.
