Sinan Oğan, the presidential candidate for the ATA Alliance who obtained by surprise more than 5% of the votes in the 1st round of the elections in Turkey, announced on Monday that he will finally support Erdoğan in the 2nd round of the presidential elections, scheduled for May 28. “Following our internal deliberations, I want to announce that I will support the presidential candidate of the People’s Alliance, Mr. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, in the 2nd round. I also call on my voters to support Mr. Erdoğan,” Oğan said at a long-awaited press conference.
Oğan, who has assured that he never requested any position from either of the two candidates, would have set as conditions for his support a strong fight against all terrorist organizations, and set a schedule for the return of refugees to their countries of origin, and he reasoned his decision in favor of stability and a strong government, recalling that Erdoğan’s AK party (AKP) has obtained a parliamentary majority. Coinciding with the announcement, however, the president of the Justice Party (Adalet Partisi), Vecdet Öz, announced his departure from the ATA Alliance and his support for Kılıçdaroğlu for the presidency in the 2nd round.
In any case, Sinan Oğan’s support for Erdoğan further complicates the options of the opposition candidate to win in the second round of the elections in Turkey, since he remained in the first round 5 points behind Erdoğan, who obtained 49.5% of votes.
