For the first time since it was reopened as a mosque last year, the call to prayer (adhan in Arabic, ezan in Turkish) resounded yesterday in Hagia Sophia for iftar, the daily fast-breaking dinner during the holy month of Ramadan. Hagia Sophia, a former Orthodox basilica, functioned as a mosque from the fall of Constantinople in 1453 until 1934, when it was converted into a museum. 86 years later, in July 2020, it reopened transformed into a mosque.
