In a new chapter of the most classic derby in Turkish football, Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray ended the 14th round of the Turkish league with a 1-1 draw at the Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium in Istanbul, prolonging the battle for the top of the standings for another round of the league.
The first half of the derby belonged to the visitors: in the 27th minute, Leroy Sané, after Galatasaray had stolen the ball in midfield, managed to penetrate the Fenerbahçe defences and infiltrate into the box, where he unleashed a shot that was deflected by a defender, deceiving the goalkeeper and putting Galatasaray ahead. The Galatasaray fans celebrated loudly, while in the stands of the Şükrü Saracoğlu stadium there was a tense silence among the Yellow Canaries‘ supporters.
Moments before the end of the first half, a Fenerbahçe goal that would have equalised for Domenico Tedesco‘s side was disallowed after a VAR review for a touch of the ball with the arm of Slovakian Milan Škriniar, who was rather annoyed with the decision. In the second half, the chances were shared between the two sides and the Lions had a chance to make it 0-2 with Sané’s 60th-minute shot that went just wide of the post after hitting Škriniar’s leg.
Just when the victory for Okan Buruk‘s side looked a foregone conclusion, a stoppage-time winner came in the form of a cross from the left flank that found the head of Jhon Duran, who powered home to level the scores in the 95th minute, setting off a wild celebrations in the stands among the Fenerbahçe fans.
The draw leaves the top of the table as it was: leader Galatasaray a point clear of their opponent but with a golden opportunity missed to extend their lead after dominating for much of the game. For its part, Fenerbahçe strengthened its title bid thanks to Durán’s late goal that saved a night that seemed doomed to defeat.
