Turkey, miners fasting in Ramadan

Fasting in Ramadan working in a mine 250 metres underground

Fasting during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan implies, on these dates, not intaking food or drink for more than 15 hours a day. It is difficult for anyone, but even more so for miners who work hundreds of metres underground in mines like those in the Turkish province of Zonguldak; here, the miners gather shortly before sunset for sahur, the pre-dawn lunch, and pray that they can fast for the rest of the day. “We would like to do the sahur with our families, but we have to work to live. Mine is hard, but we have nothing else,” says a miner who has been working in the mine for 20 years.
