Turkish President Tayyip Erdoğan commented on the recent protests in France that have shaken world public opinion, saying that Turkey is following the riots with “great concern” after the murder at a police checkpoint of Nahel, a 17-year-old boy of Algerian origin. “Turkey also fears that these incidents could lead to a new wave of pressure, intimidation and suppression against Muslims and immigrants in France,” said Erdoğan, who strongly condemned the indiscriminate attacks and looting during the protests.
“The streets cannot be used to seek justice. However, it is clear that the French authorities should learn lessons from this social explosion,” said the Turkish president. “At the root of the events that have started in France, there is the social architecture built by this (racist) mentality. Most of the immigrants condemned to live in ghettos, and who are systematically oppressed, are Muslims,” he added.
Erdoğan, who referred to the protests in France after a meeting yesterday of his government cabinet, also severely condemned the recent burning of a copy of the Quran in front of the main mosque in Stockholm, insisting that such acts have no place within the “freedom of expression“. “Just as it is not freedom to set fire to a church, a synagogue, or the temple of any other religion, it cannot be freedom to burn a copy of the Holy Quran,” the Turkish president sentenced, just a few days before the NATO summit in Lithuania, where Sweden depends on Turkey’s approval to join.
