Cunda Island, a well-known tourist destination on Turkey’s Aegean coast located in the Ayvalık district of Balıkesir province, has received official status as a protected cultural and natural space, according to reports published by Turkish agencies citing Official Gazette sources. In this way, tourist and construction activities on the island will be limited to avoid causing damage to its landscape and its cultural and environmental assets. Cunda is a 23 km2 island located between the Turkish coast and the Greek island of Lesbos, famous as a holiday destination and whose architecture stands out for small houses that recall its Greek past, with cobbled streets that today are full of tourist shops, and with numerous restaurants located by the sea.
