The heavy rainfall recorded in the province of Sakarya, in north-western Turkey, has led to severe flooding, with water levels reaching up to one metre in some places, forcing schools to close.
According to reports in the Turkish media, the torrential rain that continues to affect the entire province caused flooding in the area, following the alert issued by the Turkish General Directorate of Meteorology.
The worst-hit area has been the district of Karasu, situated some 150 kilometres east of Istanbul, where water accumulated in a reservoir in the area overflowed and ended up flooding the town centre. Several homes and businesses were affected, bringing road transport in the region to a complete standstill.
Water levels exceed one metre in some areas
The rainfall, which lasted for several hours, caused water accumulated from the rain and the overflow of a local dam to cover the town centre. The rising water level, which flooded the area via the sewerage system, exceeded one metre in depth at some points.
“The floodwater suddenly entered the neighbourhood at around 7.30 in the morning. The water level is much higher than in previous years,” said a local resident. “There is an excessive amount of water and it is difficult to drain it away. Between 50 and 60 homes in the centre of the neighbourhood were affected by the flooding,” he added.
The floods inundated the basements of some homes and businesses and caused extensive damage to agricultural land in the area. In light of the situation caused by the flooding, local authorities in Turkey decided to suspend lessons for one day at primary and secondary schools in the area to ensure the safety of the pupils.
