A severe storm that hit the district of Aksu in the Turkish province of Antalya on Thursday afternoon caused serious flooding, turning streets into lakes and leaving several vehicles trapped by the water. Drivers and residents mobilised to unblock drains and sewers and prevent the water level from rising further.
As reported by local media outlets, the downpour, which particularly affected the Barbaros neighbourhood and lasted about an hour, caused severe flooding that paralysed traffic. After the storm passed, teams from the Antalya Metropolitan Council intervened to clean the drainage systems, allowing the water to gradually recede.
The episode occurred after a rain warning was issued the day before by the General Directorate of Meteorology of Turkey, which had already warned of heavy rainfall in several regions of the country. In the western provinces of Çanakkale, Aydın, Antalya and İzmir, numerous homes and businesses were flooded, while in Samsun, on the Turkish Black Sea coast, retaining walls and pavements collapsed due to the storm.
In the province of Batman, in south-eastern Anatolia, torrential rains caused landslides that forced the closure of access to 25 villages and 30 hamlets. Meanwhile, in the province of İzmir, authorities are searching for a missing person who was swept away by the water while travelling in their vehicle. The Interior Ministry also confirmed that a yellow alert for rain had been issued for eight provinces in the country.
The weather forecast indicates that the rain and storms will continue until Saturday, improving considerably on Sunday – except in the eastern Turkish provinces – with sunny and clear skies on Monday.
