The body of Mendul Dirimo, a 9-year-old boy who fell into the Karaçay River in Osmaniye, in southern Turkey, has finally been found after his family alerted the authorities to his disappearance, triggering a large-scale search and rescue operation in the area.
The incident occurred on Sunday at the Karaçay recreational area, located in the Haraz neighborhood on the outskirts of the city of Osmaniye. The boy was walking with his family when he fell into the stream and disappeared around 4:00 p.m. After receiving the report, emergency teams dispatched to the scene launched a large-scale search operation to try to locate the child, according to the Turkish news agency DHA.
Due to the increased flow in the stream bed caused by melting snow and the heavy rains and storms that have battered the region, teams from the fire department and the Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Agency (AFAD) worked until 9 p.m., but operations had to be suspended overnight for safety reasons.
Operations resumed on Monday morning with the participation of the Adana Police Department’s Underwater Operations Group, which deployed divers to search the river, while the riverbank and surrounding areas were inspected using drones. Firefighting units from Osmaniye also participated.
Finally, the body of Mendul Dirimo was found yesterday around 1:30 p.m. by the Gendarmerie Search and Rescue Unit (JAK), approximately 3 kilometers from where he fell, trapped under a log; he was subsequently transferred to the morgue at Osmaniye Hospital for an autopsy, while an official investigation has been launched to determine the causes of the accident.
Just a few days ago, another missing boy in the province of Hakkari, in southeastern Turkey, was found dead following an intensive four-day search involving dozens of personnel. His family had reported him missing after the child fell into a river in the area. The body was finally found 300 meters from where he was believed to have fallen into the water.
