Mark Dickey, an experienced American explorer who has been trapped for days in Turkey’s third-deepest cave, was able late yesterday to post a message thanking to Turkish authorities and rescue teams from Turkey and other countries who have managed to reach his location, 1,276 metres below the surface. “I was very close to the edge,” said an emotional Dickey, who suffered a gastrointestinal haemorrhage while exploring the Morca cave, located in the Anamur district of Turkey’s southern Mersin province.
Although rescuers – including international experts, and members of AFAD and UMKE from Turkey – have managed to reach 40-year-old Dickey to bring him medication and aid, it is still unclear how they will get Dickey to the surface, as he himself acknowledged in the video that he is in no condition to get out on his own.
