Balloon flights for tourists over Göbeklitepe, the oldest man-made sanctuary that has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, resumed yesterday after being suspended by the coronavirus pandemic. The mayor of Şanlıurfa has set out to make balloon flights over Göbeklitepe the second most famous in Turkey, after Cappadocia. Built in the Neolithic, Göbeklitepe is a set of sanctuaries built by groups of human hunter-gatherers about 12,000 years ago, when the world was still in the last ice age, making it twice as old as places like Stonehenge or the pyramids of Egypt. Until its discovery, it was thought that humans at that time did not have the organisational capacity to create permanent structures of this size.
