At least 9 people died, three of them children, and about 40 were injured after a 5.9-degree earthquake that broke out in Iran near the Turkish border caused damage to several houses in rural areas of Van province , east of Turkey. Many victims had to be rescued from under the rubble after their homes collapsed. In recent months Turkey has suffered several major earthquakes that have caused dozens of deaths; In 2011 Van suffered another 7.2-degree earthquake that caused more than 600 deaths.
