Ilham Aliyev has been re-elected president of Azerbaijan with more than 92% of the vote in elections held in the South Caucasus country, according to data released Thursday by Azerbaijan’s central election commission, confirming his fifth term in office since he came to power in 2003.
The state news agency AZERTAC announced that the chairman of the election commission, Mazahir Panahov, reported that with more than 93% of the ballots counted, Aliyev had received 92.05% of the vote in an election with a turnout of around 76%. His rival, independent candidate Zahid Oruj, an ally of Aliyev’s government, received just over 2% of the vote. The two main opposition parties, Musavat and the Popular Front, announced a boycott of the elections with accusations against the government of undemocratic practices.
Elections in Azerbaijan were not originally scheduled to take place until 2025 after Aliyev won his fourth seven-year term in 2018, but the Azerbaijani president decided to bring them forward after Azerbaijan took full control of Karabakh last September. Aliyev has led the country since the October 2003 presidential elections, in which he won 79.46% of the vote, succeeding his father Heydar Aliyev, who was seriously ill and died in December 2003.
