A tragic accident that occurred this morning in Ankara left 5 people dead and 14 injured, 4 of whom are in serious condition, after a private bus crashed into a pillar of an overpass in the Kahramankazan district, on the outskirts of the Turkish capital. The accident occurred this morning on the Istanbul Highway, near the Saray neighborhood.
The vehicle, a minibus traveling between Kızılcahamam and Ankara, lost control after veering off the road. According to initial investigations, it first struck a guardrail, then overturned until it finally crashed into the support pillar of the overpass known as Şehit Mehmet Özden.
After several witnesses to the accident alerted emergency services, numerous medical, police, and fire crews arrived at the scene. The injured were rescued from inside the wrecked vehicle and transported by ambulance to nearby hospitals. Initially, four deaths were reported, but later the death toll rose to five, including the driver, according to the news agency DHA.
The Ankara Prosecutor’s Office stated in a press release that “three prosecutors have been assigned by the Kahramankazan Prosecutor’s Office to investigate the single-vehicle traffic accident that resulted in the deaths of 5 people and injuries to 14 others. Experts dispatched to the scene are conducting the investigation, which is proceeding meticulously.”
Four of the deceased, including the driver, have been identified
Four of the fatalities have been identified as the minibus driver, Efe Erdem, as well as passengers Mehmet Sucu and his daughter Safiye Simge Sucu, and Hamiyet Bilge Uslu. Efforts to identify another deceased passenger are ongoing. It has been reported that the driver of the bus was married and had two young children.
As part of the accident investigation, in which three prosecutors are participating, two experts continue to examine the causes of the crash. Additionally, security camera footage has emerged showing the vehicle traveling at high speed until it loses control, striking a barrier and veering off course before crashing into the overpass pillar.
Meanwhile, the Ankara prosecutor’s office has announced the arrest of the owner of the bus, identified as İ.Ç. In a statement, the West Ankara Chief Prosecutor’s Office noted that drivers of private public transportation, including minibuses, must submit the necessary documentation to the Ankara City Council and obtain a fitness-to-drive report before beginning work. Since the suspect did not submit the necessary documents, he has been arrested.
