The Istanbul governor’s office confirmed in the last few hours that the number of deaths in the city from drinking fake alcohol adulterated with methyl alcohol has now risen to 30 people between Monday and Wednesday of this week alone, while 53 more people were hospitalised of which only four were discharged and 31 are in intensive care.
In a statement issued yesterday and reported by Turkish media, the governor of Istanbul said that 66 cases of illegal alcohol poisoning were reported in the last 48 hours, of which 23 resulted in deaths. The latest fatalities were three middle-aged Uzbek citizens who consumed alcohol in the districts of Bağcılar, Başakşehir and Kartal and died after being admitted to hospital in serious condition.
According to the Istanbul governor, 34 people have died since 1 January from drinking methyl alcohol added to illegally produced alcoholic beverages sold at a cheaper price, while 29 tonnes of illegal alcohol have been seized in different operations in the city.
‘Those who produce or sell adulterated alcohol, causing the death of dozens of our citizens, are no different from terrorists who murder people. Our fight against these vile individuals, who endanger the lives of our people for financial gain, will continue,’ the governor said in the statement released via social media.
