A terrible traffic accident left 3 dead and 26 injured in the southeastern Turkish province of Şanlıurfa last night, when a truck that ran out of brakes rammed into several vehicles and fell off a bridge, dragging other cars with it.
Turkish media reported that the accident occurred last night at around 21:30 (19:30 CET) in the town of Birecik, located halfway between the cities of Şanlıurfa and Gaziantep and only 20 km from the border with Syria.
The tragedy reportedly started when a truck ran out of brakes and rammed up to five vehicles on its way, before it reached the height of one of the bridges crossing the Euphrates River, at which point it went off the road and broke the safety barrier falling off and dragging another car with it.
Numerous emergency personnel were sent immediately to the scene and three people were confirmed dead: two men and one woman, the latter still unidentified, according to the governor of Şanlıurfa, who expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased and the injured; the media initially reported 22 people injured, but the number was later raised to 26.
Footage of the horrific accident recorded by security cameras in the area shows the moment when the truck with no brakes plunges violently off the bridge along with another car it had crashed into. The video also shows how a car on the road under the bridge narrowly escapes being crushed by the lorry for just a second.
