A dozen people were injured after a fire broke out in a block of flats in a housing estate in Çanakkale, northwestern Turkey, amid a harrowing evacuation with several of the building’s residents waiting out of windows or clinging to balcony railings to try to escape the fire and smoke as they waited to be evacuated.
According to the Turkish daily Hürriyet, the fire broke out for reasons still under investigation on the third floor of a building in the Hamidiye neighbourhood of the coastal town of Kepez, south of the city of Çanakkale. Residents of the neighbourhood immediately alerted the 112 emergency services, who dispatched fire crews, police and medical personnel from Kepez and also from neighbouring Çanakkale to the area.
Several of the residents of the burning building were able to get out by themselves or with the help of other neighbours, while the rest – especially on the higher floors – were evacuated with the help of the fire brigade. The fire was brought under control and extinguished after about an hour.
Despite the size of the fire, no fatalities were reported, although a total of ten people suffering from smoke poisoning were taken by ambulance to the Mehmet Akif Ersoy and ÇOMÜ public hospitals in Çanakale for treatment. The harrowing moment when several of the building’s residents jumped out of their windows and balconies fleeing the fire and calling for help was recorded by several neighbours who witnessed the incident and watched helplessly as they watched the scene.
