The famous American hard rock band Guns N’ Roses had a precious gesture with Mattia Ahmet Minguzzi, the 15-year-old boy brutally murdered last January in the heart of Istanbul, coinciding with the massive concert they offered yesterday at the Tüpraş stadium in the Turkish metropolis.
Turkish media reported that the well-known band decided to share on their social networks a video with their famous song ‘Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door’ in memory of Mattia, in which the image and the name of the boy appeared, after they learned that Mattia Ahmet wanted to attend the band’s concert in Istanbul, thanks to several Turkish artists who echoed the victim’s wish on social media.
The boy’s mother, Yasemin Minguzzi, also posted on Instagram a video of the Guns N’ Roses ballad ‘This I Love’ and the message ‘We will be together at Tüpraş stadium, my son’. Later and during last night’s concert in Istanbul at the Beşiktaş’ stadium, the band performed live the song ‘Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door’ projecting on a big screen the image of Mattia: an emotional gesture that earned a long ovation from the thousands of people attending the event.
The brutal crime of Mattia Ahmet Minguzzi has shaken Turkish society, shocked by the news that his killers were two other minors who stabbed and beat the victim in a market in Kadıköy for no apparent reason. Minguzzi died 15 days later in hospital from his serious injuries, and his two killers face up to 24 years in prison.
Just hours before the start of the trial last April, Mattia Ahmet Minguzzi’s grave was desecrated and badly damaged, although the perpetrator was arrested shortly afterwards. In addition to the grief over the death of their only son, the family has been receiving threats from the entourage of the two minors arrested for the terrible murder. Meanwhile, this death has reopened the debate on the need to increase sentences for crimes committed by minors, as under current legislation the two murderers cannot be sentenced to life imprisonment.
