Turkey’s health minister, Fahrettin Koca, confirmed on Friday via his X/Twitter profile that at least nine cases of coronavirus infection with the new EG.5 (Eris) variant have been detected in the country. “These individuals have had contact with people abroad, and have been located in the same province,” Koca said, stressing that the new variant should not be a cause for concern at this stage as it has so far shown little potential to cause severe cases of COVID.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) has classified EG.5, nicknamed Eris, as a subvariant of Omicron and considers it a new “variant of concern”; this mutation of the virus has been detected in several countries around the world, but for now, experts believe there is no evidence that infections with this variant of the coronavirus pose a serious health risk in terms of severity of COVID symptoms.
