Amid growing concern about the resilience of Istanbul’s buildings to a potential major earthquake, a newly released report has revealed that 1 in 5 Istanbul buildings are built on hazardous areas, with unstable ground or prone to subsidence and landslides, so they are unsuitable for building: wooded areas, river basins and riverbeds, agricultural and/or sandy land… For example, there are 8,829 hectares built on seven major river basins: Terkos, Büyükçekmece, Küçükçekmece, Alibeyköy, Sazlıdere, Elmalı and Ömerli. In total, 20.4% of the buildings in Istanbul are built on these geologically unstable areas, with a high risk of serious damage in the event of an earthquake.
