The US space agency NASA has released satellite images showing the damage caused by the earthquakes in Turkey. The images show the city of Kahramanmaraş – epicenter of the earthquakes on February 6 – and its district of Türkoğlu, as well as the Nurdağı district of the neighboring province of Gaziantep. “These have been very large and powerful earthquakes that occurred along various fault segments,” says Eric Fielding, a geophysicist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, who compared the strength of these quakes to the 1906 quake that destroyed the city of san francisco. In the image, the dark red pixels represent areas 30 meters on each side that have suffered severe infrastructure damage or major changes to the landscape. In orange or yellow pixels the damage is moderate or partial, respectively.
