The destruction caused by the recent earthquakes in Turkey has left 1.5 million people homeless for which more than half a million homes – now destroyed by the quakes – will be needed, according to United Nations data. Currently some 865,000 people are living in tents and 25,000 in container homes after the disaster, while 376,000 are living in government-provided temporary accommodation outside the quake-affected region. In Turkish cities such as Mersin, close to the provinces of Kahramanmaraş and Hatay (the two most affected by the earthquakes), it is estimated that in just two weeks the population has increased by 40% after the arrival of some 400,000 survivors of the earthquakes, representing a challenge for the city’s infrastructure, accommodation and transportation.
