Home and residential property sales in Turkey plummeted as much as 18% in February in the wake of devastating earthquakes in the south-east of the country, which have destroyed or irreparably damaged more than 230,000 buildings, leaving more than 1.5 million people homeless. According to data published today by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK), a total of 80,031 homes were sold in February, the lowest data since May 2021 and 18.1% less than the 97,708 that were sold in January, in the midst of the concern of buyers about the resistance of buildings in the event of a future earthquake, especially in large cities such as Istanbul.
