In 2020, 91 people died and some 20,000 were injured in the approximately 15,000 traffic accidents that occurred in Istanbul.
The traffic division of the Istanbul Security Agency has released a study showing the 10 accident black spots in the city where traffic accidents are considerably more frequent, in an attempt to educate drivers and reduce the rate of deaths on the asphalt of this metropolis of 16 million inhabitants.
In 2020, 91 people died and some 20,000 were injured in the approximately 15,000 traffic accidents that occurred in Istanbul throughout the past year; and according to traffic data, the place where the highest number of fatal accidents was recorded on both sides of the Bosphorus Bridge (Bridge of the Martyrs of July 15), where between January 1 and December 31, 2020 33 accidents with fatalities occurred.
The second place with the worst accident rate is the Cevizlibağ area on the D-100 motorway, with 31 accidents with fatalities, while the area of the Zeytinburnu metrobus station – also on the D-100 – occupies third place, with 20 accidents resulting in death. The Barbaros Boulevard – in the Beşiktaş district – closes the list in 10th place with 10 fatal accidents registered in 2020.
The list with the Top 10 black spots with the most traffic accidents in Istanbul is as follows:
- Exit and entrance of the Bosphorus Bridge (33 fatal accidents in 2020)
- Cevizlibağ area on the D-100 highway (31 accidents)
- Zeytinburnu metrobus station area on the D-100 (20 accidents)
- OPET station area on Piyalepaşa Avenue (16 accidents)
- Crossing between Vatan and Akdeniz Avenues (14 accidents)
- Sultangazi detour (direction Edirne) on the TEM motorway (13 accidents)
- Kozyatağı area on the D-100 highway (12 accidents)
- Crossing between Pendik Sahil Yolu Boulevard and Gül Street (12 accidents)
- Crossing between Büyükdere Avenue and Ortaklar Avenue (11 accidents)
- Barbaros Avenue near the Kışla Önü stop (10 accidents)
