Fatih Karagümrük pulled off the surprise of the day with a 2-0 win over Fenerbahçe in Istanbul last night, a result that dealt a blow to the Turkish league title hopefuls as they slipped away from leaders Galatasaray. The home side, who came into the game bottom of the table, managed to impose themselves effectively in the first half and withstood the pressure after the break.
The game in a deserted, virtually empty Atatürk Olympic Stadium went Karagümrük’s way early on when Bartuğ Elmaz opened the scoring after 15 minutes; the midfielder, on loan from Fenerbahçe until the end of the season, seized a chance in the box from a corner kick with a powerful shot to put his side ahead.
In first-half stoppage time, Serginho extended the lead with a low shot from a loose ball in the six-yard box, leaving Fenerbahçe – who, paradoxically, had been the clear favourites for the game – with an uphill struggle before the break.
In the second half, Domenico Tedesco‘s side tried to react and turn the scoreline around, but failed to convert their superiority into goals despite trying hard and clearly dominating possession for much of the game. A solid home defence and bad luck kept a clean sheet for the Yellow Canaries until the final whistle.
Fenerbahçe‘s defeat to the bottom side of the Turkish Super League is a serious setback for a team aiming to take this year’s league title from Galatasaray, who, if they beat Başakşehir today, would move no less than seven points clear of Fener. For Karagümrük, on the other hand, this unexpected win gives them three vital points in their fight to move away from the bottom of the table and avoid relegation in the remaining eight rounds of the season.
