Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan stated on Friday that Turkey will not allow itself to be drawn into the escalating conflict between Iran, Israel and the United States, whilst emphasising that his government is taking all necessary measures to protect its airspace whilst seeking to keep the country out of the war in the Middle East.
“As a government, we are acting with extreme caution in the face of the conspiracies, traps and provocations that seek to drag our country into war. We are not only focusing on the visible aspects of what is happening, but also on what lies behind the scenes; we are not ruling out any possibility or scenario, and we are analysing and examining everything down to the smallest detail,” the Turkish leader said during an iftar – the meal that breaks the daily fast during Ramadan – held in Istanbul.
“During this process, as happened last night (referring to the latest downing of an Iranian missile that entered Turkish airspace), we are also taking the necessary preventive measures against any threat that violates our airspace. Türkiye’s millennia-old statecraft and our government’s 23 years of experience in crisis management are our best guides for reading, understanding and responding to the complex events unfolding around us, in a correct and measured manner,” he added in remarks reported by the Turkish newspaper Hürriyet.
In this regard, Erdoğan insisted that the priority for his government is to keep Turkey out of the conflict spreading across the Middle East: “Keeping our country out of this cauldron of fire is our top priority. I also ask you to be very vigilant against the sectarian and ethnic provocations being fuelled alongside the attacks on Iran,” he concluded.
