Konyaspor pull off a surprise to topple Galatasaray in the Süper Lig

In a totally unexpected result in the Turkish Süper Lig that puts Okan Buruk’s team’s league lead in jeopardy, Tümosan Konyaspor caused the surprise of the day – and possibly of the whole season – by beating 2-0 Galatasaray, who were clear favourites after beating Juventus in the Champions League: a result that breaks the unbeaten run of the reigning champions, who could be level on points with Fenerbahçe if they beat Kasımpaşa tomorrow.

In an intense encounter at the Metropolitan Stadium in Konya yesterday afternoon, Galatasaray opened the scoring with a goal from Leroy Sané in the 48th minute of play, but after a VAR review it was disallowed for offside, sparking outrage from the Lions and their coaching staff.

It took until the 74th minute for the home side to break the 0-0 deadlock thanks to a goal from Adil Demirbağ, who headed home from a corner inside the six-yard box just when Konyaspor were on top, sparking euphoria among players and fans alike.

Galatasaray, who dominated possession throughout the 90 minutes, tried to react by pushing forward in search of an equaliser, but Okan Buruk’s strategy left gaps which the Konya side took advantage of to kill the game off just six minutes later, when Blaz Kramer added to their lead by firing home under the posts and with the goal gaping after a move which broke down the Galata’s defence.

The result in Konya was Galatasaray’s second defeat of the season, leaving the Istanbul side on 55 points and in a difficult situation if they are level on points with Fenerbahçe. The ‘Cimbom’ team suffered in the Anatolian city the absence of one of their star players, Osimhen, who the coach left out of the squad with a knee injury. For their part, Konyaspor gained confidence by earning three vital points to move away from the bottom of the table, where they occupy 13th place.
