The PKK terrorist group announced today an immediate “ceasefire” following the historic declaration made on Thursday by its leader, Abdullah Öcalan, calling on the armed organisation to lay down its weapons and dissolve in order to integrate into Turkish society, on the grounds that it “has reached the end of its useful life”.
In a public statement issued by the terrorist organisation and echoed by numerous Turkish media outlets, the group confirmed that the announced truce comes into effect with immediate effect: ‘We fully support the content of the appeal made by Öcalan and affirm our commitment to adhere to and implement his requests on our part. However, we emphasise that for it to be successful, there must also be an adequate legal and democratic political framework’, stated the text released by the PKK.
‘None of our forces will participate in armed actions unless they are attacked,’ the statement said. The PKK nevertheless adds that a “safe environment” must be guaranteed in order to convene a congress at which its dissolution will be agreed, and that “Öcalan must personally lead the congress for it to be successful”.
Although the announcement issued by the PKK (Kurdistan Workers’ Party) confirmed that the ceasefire comes into effect today, the terrorist group also demands that Abdullah Öcalan – who has been serving a life sentence on the prison island of İmralı since 1999 – “must have the conditions to be able to live and work in physical freedom, and enjoy unrestricted access to be able to meet with whoever he wants, including his comrades”. ‘We trust that the relevant institutions of the State of Turkey will meet these requirements,’ the organisation concludes.
