After the news of the death of Narin Güran, the 8-year-old girl who went missing on 21 August in a village in Diyarbakır province (southeastern Anatolia) shook the whole of Turkey yesterday, the information and last news about the murder after the discovery of her body in a river yesterday is bringing to light details of a crime that could implicate a whole family.
Narin’s lifeless body was found yesterday morning in the Eğertutmaz river, located just 1.5 km from the small village of Tavşantepe where the girl lived with her parents and siblings; it was a gendarmerie search and rescue team that found the body at around 8:45 a.m. stuffed inside a sack and covered with stones and branches to avoid arousing suspicion and give the appearance that it was a natural formation in the river.
Inside the sack, in addition to the girl – whose body was deformed due to time and water – wearing the same clothes she was wearing on the day of her disappearance, her belongings were also found, including her backpack, her slippers, and the notebook she used to attend religious classes at the local mosque.
Preliminary autopsy completed
According to Turkish media reports, Turkish Justice Minister Yılmaz Tunç announced in recent hours that Narin’s autopsy has been completed after an 11-hour examination that began at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday and concluded at 9:40 p.m. in the evening. During the autopsy, carried out by a team of forensic experts, chemical, biological and pathological samples were taken from the body and transferred to the Diyarbakır and Istanbul Institutes of Forensic Medicine for examination, after which a final report detailing the exact causes of the girl’s death will be issued, Tunç said.
The minister also announced that the number of people detained for their possible connection to the crime has been increased to 24, and that interrogations are continuing. ‘At this stage of the investigation, the process of interrogating the detainees continues. Every detail is being meticulously examined to shed light on this painful event and reveal the truth. Those who caused the death of our girl Narin will not be able to escape, and will be brought to justice,’ he assured.
As part of the investigation, the car belonging to Narin’s uncle, Salim Güran, who has been detained since 2 September since traces of the girl’s DNA were found in his vehicle, has been sent to the Institute of Forensic Medicine in Istanbul for re-examination. In addition to being a close relative of the missing girl, the detainee is also the village head (muhtar) of Tavşantepe, the village where Narin lived.
Narin’s parents and siblings arrested for the crime
There were also surprising developments in recent hours with the arrest as part of the investigation into the crime of several of Narin’s relatives, including her mother, father and two older brothers, according to a warrant issued by the Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office in Diyarbakır.
Three uncles of the girl and the wife of Salim Güran, Narin’s uncle who was the first to be arrested after her disappearance, have also been detained. All of them are currently continuing to give statements as part of the new enquiries launched following the discovery of the body, which immediately led to the blockade of the village of Tavşantepe, where the gendarmerie has not let anyone in or out since yesterday and has questioned all its residents.
As part of the investigation into the murder of Narin Güran, Justice Minister Yılmaz Tunç has also announced that 3 more prosecutors and an vice prosecutor have been assigned to the Diyarbakır Prosecutor’s Office to assist in the investigation of the crime. Meanwhile, after the autopsy was completed, following Islamic custom Narin’s body was buried this morning in the local cemetery of Tavşantepe after a religious ceremony in the neighbouring village of Batıkarakoç, which was attended by numerous authorities and neighbours.
