Hanoch Milwidsky, an Israeli member of the Knesset (Israel’s parliament) for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu‘s Likud party, openly justified the torture and rape of Palestinian prisoners during a parliamentary session in which he was questioned about the rape of a Palestinian inmate in the detention camp at Israel’s Sde Teiman base, where military police struggled to arrest the soldiers involved in the assault.
Milwidsky called the arrest of the soldiers “crazy”, saying that “we need to stop it” and “set an example here”’”, while assuring that he would leave parliament outraged about how “it is possible to come and arrest soldiers for things they are doing to the Nukhba terrorists“, referring to members of a military branch of Hamas who took part in the 7 October massive attack.
“To insert a stick in person’s rectum, is that legitimate?” asked then Ahmad Tibi, an MP and leader of the Arab-Israeli Ta’al party. “Shut up! Yes, he’s a Nukhba, everything is legitimate to do!” Milwidsky replied. “Everything! Everything!”, insisted again and again the Likud MP.
Precisely today, a United Nations report entitled “Detention in the context of the escalation of hostilities in Gaza” which analyses incidents from 7 October 2023 to 30 June 2024, alleges that thousands of Palestinians – including not only fighters but also doctors, patients, residents and other civilians – have been taken to Israel “usually shackled and blindfolded“; there, according to the report, they have been “held in secret, without being given a reason for their detention, access to a lawyer or effective judicial review”.
In that time, these Palestinian prisoners have been subjected to all kinds of torture, and at least 53 of them have died, according to investigators: “The testimonies gathered by my office and other entities indicate a range of appalling acts, such as waterboarding and the release of dogs on detainees, amongst other acts, in flagrant violation of international human rights law and international humanitarian law,” said the UN’s top human rights official, Austrian lawyer Volker Türk.
