Turkey’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan called for the creation of a unified alphabet for Turkic countries to strengthen their cooperation and relations, in remarks at a weekend summit in the Azerbaijani city of Susha.
“To prevent rivalries between the world’s powers from spreading to our geography, we must strengthen our cooperation and use our capabilities for our common prosperity,” Fidan was quoted by Turkish media as saying at the 6 July meeting in Susha of the Organisation of Turkic States (OTS), an umbrella organisation of Turkey, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan; the leaders of Turkmenistan and Hungary, two non-member countries with observer status in the organisation, were also present at the meeting.
“We must establish a single alphabet as soon as possible. We must build the necessary partnership base to strengthen our cooperation in areas such as connectivity, energy, finance, trade, defence industry or new technologies,” Fidan insisted. During the meeting, Kazakhstan‘s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev made a proposal along the same lines, proposing to develop “a great Turkish language model” using Artificial Intelligence.
Three of the Turkic countries of the OTS (Turkey, Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan) use the Latin alphabet with minor variations in their writing, while Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan continue to use Cyrillic characters as their main alphabet.
In his speech, the foreign minister of Turkey also called on member states to join in recognising the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus so that “Turkish Cypriots regain their legitimate rights as an integral part of the Turkic world“; Fidan also called for greater support for initiatives around the world for Turkic culture and identity “to protect the identity of our compatriots living in the Balkans, Eastern Europe, the Middle East and other parts of the world”.
