Torrential rains in Turkey’s northern and eastern provinces have caused major flooding that has left at least two people dead in the region, while meteorologists warn that the risk of storms and further floods in the area has not yet passed.
According to Turkish media reports, two people were killed in the provinces of Ordu and Muş by heavy rains that began yesterday afternoon, which in Ordu reached 100 litres per square metre in the districts of İkizce and Çaybaşı; in the latter, an 83-year-old woman lost her life when she fell into the water while trying to cross a flooded area, her body being recovered later by rescuers a kilometre away.
In Muş, where heavy rainfall caused severe damage especially to houses and agricultural fields, a 20-year-old woman drowned despite the efforts of her neighbours to save her.
The Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Agency (AFAD) issued a statement in which it also reported the evacuation of several areas in Samsun due to the risk of flooding from rising river waters. Meteorologists have issued a yellow alert for flood risk for 12 provinces (Ağrı, Erzincan, Giresun, Muş, Samsun, Van, Bingöl, Erzurum, Kars, Trabzon, Bayburt and Ardahan), while an orange alert remains in place for Ordu province.
