13 million euro for the New Year’s lottery ”Big” Prize

400 million liras, or almost 13 million euros, is the amount to be won by the winner of this year’s New Year’s lottery “Big” prize in Turkey, which is expected to distribute a total of almost 74 million euros in prizes this year. With prices of 400 liras (13 euros) for a single lottery ticket, 200 liras for half a ticket and 100 liras for a ¼ share, many Turkish buyers are opting for the cheaper options, even if it means having to share the prize with more people.

An extra incentive to buy lottery this year, is that last year’s New Year’s lottery “Big” prize in Turkey was half that amount, 200 million liras; on that occasion, it was precisely four people – who had each bought a ¼ share of one lottery ticket – who had to share the lottery’s first prize, corresponding to the number 6530303. As usual every year, we will see long queues in front of lottery sellers, such as the famous “Nimet Abla” in Eminönü (Istanbul). On the evening of 31 December, New Year’s Eve, the eagerly awaited draw will be broadcast live on television, and we will learn about who this year’s lucky winners are.
