Voting for Sunday’s elections in Turkey began at 8:00 a.m. local time at polling stations across much of the country, except in 32 provinces in the east and southeast of the country where it began at 7:00 a.m. taking into account daylight hours; in these provinces polling stations will close at 4:00 p.m. (15:00 CET), while in the rest of the country they will close at 17:00 hours (16:00 CET): it will be from then on that the first exit polls will be made public, and the counting of votes will begin with the first results.
More than 61 million Turkish citizens have been called to the polls at some 208,000 polling stations and voting centres across the country for today’s local elections in Turkey, with 12,725 candidates – 653 of them independents – running for office in 81 provinces, 922 districts, 397 municipalities and 18,257 villages. For these elections Istanbul has broken its own record with as many as 49 candidates, 27 of them independents.
But today all eyes will be on these elections in Turkey in three major cities: Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir. Here, the majority AKP party of current Turkish President Tayyip Erdoğan will try to regain the metropolitan mayoralty of these three major cities, which the AK Parti lost in the previous municipal elections of 2019 to the main opposition party (the CHP), although a recount had to be held in Istanbul after a narrow victory by Ekrem İmamoğlu.
