Turkey’s unemployment rate fell slightly in May to 8.4% of the labour force, according to the latest data released on Monday by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK), showing a 0.2 point drop in unemployment in the Eurasian country compared to the previous month.
The report released today by Turkey’s official statistics agency notes that the level of unemployment among job seekers aged 15 and over fell by 69,000 compared to April to leave the total number of jobless at 2.97 million, with the unemployment rate standing at 6.5% among men and 11.9% among women.
The number of employed persons in Turkey reached 32.5 million in May, up 0.1 point from 32.4 million in April, while the labour force increased in the same period from 35.46 million to 35.49 million. The labour force participation rate thus remained at 53.5% in May, while the employment rate rose slightly to 49% from 48.9% in April.
The TÜİK data further reveal that youth unemployment – applicable to the 15-24 age group – fell in May to 15.4%, after having reached 15.7% in April. Unemployment among the younger population thus stands at 11% among young men, but rises to 23.5% among women.
Finally, the statistical report reveals that the average number of actual weekly hours worked by employed persons in Turkey reached 42.7 hours per week in May, representing an increase of 0.6 hours in actual working hours compared to the previous month.
