Turks spend almost 2 hours a day listening to the radio

Despite the impact of advances in technology on consumption habits, radio listening continues to play a significant role in Turkey, according to data from a new study conducted by the Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK), which shows that Turks spend almost 2 hours a day listening to radio and music content.

The study analysed radio consumption habits as well as listening to content from digital platforms; it was carried out with the participation of 15,766 people aged 15 and over across the country, and has been released through the Turkish news agency Anatolia on the occasion of World Radio Day, which is commemorated on 13 February,

The survey found that the average daily radio listening time among the Turkish population is 1 hour and 40 minutes; it also found that 14.5% of Turks have a radio at home, although taking gender into account, it was revealed that the proportion of men who have a radio at home is higher than that of women.

By age group, ownership of at least one radio at home or at work stood at 9.8% among 15-24 year olds; 12.9% among 25-34 year olds; 15.7% among 35-44 year olds; 15.6% among 45-54 year olds; 17.2% in the 55-64 age group; and 18% among those aged 65 and over. In other words: the obvious conclusion is that radio ownership increases with age.

Listening to music on the car radio, the preferred choice of Turks

The study also points out that 67.9% of music listening, both on radio broadcasts and digital platforms, is via car radios, followed by traditional radio with 27%, TV with 18%, mobile phones with 17.2%, and computers and tablets with 4.2%. In terms of gender differences, car radios are the most used by both sexes, although preferably by men: 80.2% of men and 54.3% of women use them.

The research also analysed the type of radio programmes most listened to, with respondents being able to choose more than one option if they wished. The results concluded that the content most listened to by Turks is music programmes, which 94.5% listen to, followed by news (64.2%) and debates (33.1%).
