The Turkish government has announced a new minimum wage hike for 2024 of 49% to 17,002 liras (around 520 euros), according to the Minister of Labour and Social Security, Vedat Işıkhan. The measure, which will come into effect from 1 January, aims to increase workers’ purchasing power in the face of rising inflation and prices in Turkey, which currently stand at over 61%.
In statements made to media after learning of this new rise, the president of the Confederation of Turkish Trade Unions (Türk-İş), Ergün Atalay, explained that during negotiations with the government, workers’ representatives had asked for a rise of 18,000 liras with the new year, in addition to agreeing to biannual negotiations, but that their requests were finally rejected. No further increases in the minimum wage – which is paid to about a third of workers in Turkey – are expected until the end of 2024.
