A plane specially chartered by Turkish Airlines landed in Turkey early this morning after successfully evacuating several people – most of them Turkish citizens – from Niger, where they had been trapped since the July 26 coup. The Airbus A330-200 took off at 9:30 a.m. local time from Niger’s capital, Niamey, and landed at 4:30 a.m. at Istanbul Airport; the plane was intended to leave 2 days ago, but the flight was postponed after the military junta closed the airport.
One of the evacuated Turkish citizens, Tuğyan Işık, thanked the Turkish government for getting the Niger government to authorize the Turkish Airlines flight, which “was continually being postponed”, while recounting the problems the African country is going through: “In Niger electricity comes from Nigeria. When Nigeria cuts off the electricity, there is electricity for just 2-3 hours a day. There are serious structural problems.”
