The application includes tea culture, Islamic calligraphy, or jokes about Nasreddin Hodja. Turkey is the 5th country in the world with the most inscriptions by UNESCO.
Turkey has recently submitted a request to UNESCO for the inclusion of four of its cultural values in the list of Intangible Heritage of Humanity, as reported by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
In a statement, the ministry indicated that the request submitted to UNESCO refers to three cultural values: the tea culture as a symbol of identity, hospitality and social interaction; the craftsmanship of making the düdük (mey or balaban); and the tradition of jokes about Nasreddin Hodja. Finally, a fourth cultural value related to the Islamic calligraphy of husn-i hat has been included in the application.
Turkey occupies the 5th place worldwide for the number of places and elements registered as World Heritage Sites, being 18 in total. Intangible Cultural Heritage is a UNESCO initiative that aims to protect the non-material cultural heritage of humanity.
