Turkey is considering measures to restrict access to the Internet and social networks, as well as mobile phones, for children under 13, following the example of other countries where similar actions are already being taken, such as Australia, which has just passed the world’s first law banning access to social apps for children under 16.
According to Turkish media reports, the Turkish Information and Communication Technologies Agency (BTK) is reportedly already drafting a proposal to restrict access to social applications and social networks to children under 13. For its part, the Ministry of Family and Social Services is reportedly working with the Turkish parliament to limit the use of smartphones by children in the same age group.
Just two days ago, BTK vice-president Abdülkerim Gün presented details of the proposal to limit access to social networks to an anti-bullying commission in the Turkish parliament, explaining that in states such as Florida there is already a similar ban on children under 13 years of age from using social media, while other US states are already considering similar measures for 2025. In China, for example, children under 16 need parental consent to open a social media profile, and cannot use mobile phones or the Internet between 10pm and 6am.
‘We are currently working on a proposal to ban children in middle school, below the 8th grade, from using social apps and social networks,’ said Gün. Turkish academic Tuncay Dilci told the parliamentary committee that the use of mobile phones and smartphones is already banned for children under the age of 13 in many countries, so he proposed implementing a similar measure in Turkey.
