Turkey and Russia announced late Thursday a new ceasefire agreement that came into force on Friday in Syria in the province of Idlib, after a 6-hour meeting held by Erdoğan and Putin in Moscow, that establishes “a new status quo” in the region by putting under control of the Syrian regime the strategic M4 motorway between Aleppo and Latakia, which will be patrolled by Turkish and Russian soldiers. Both countries are committed to respect the Astana agreements and help to assist the civilian population. Turkey however reserves the right to retaliate in case of an Assad attack.
