A serious traffic accident in Turkey caused alarm among the public on Tuesday after a train covering the route between the cities of Tatvan and Elazığ ran over a school bus at a busy level crossing on the outskirts of the city of Muş.
According to Turkish media reports, the bus was hit by the train as it attempted to cross the track, causing the vehicle to be severely damaged after being displaced several metres by the heavy impact. Emergency teams from 112, members of the Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Agency (AFAD), fire brigades and the police rushed to the scene of the accident as soon as they were alerted.
According to initial reports, 17 students were injured and were taken to Muş State Hospital after initial treatment by medical teams at the scene of the accident. Police temporarily cordoned off the level crossing where the crash occurred, although train service was restored once the preliminary investigation was completed.
The provincial director of National Education, Abdulkadir Altay, went to the hospital to check on the condition of the students. “All the students were taken to the hospital and are under observation. Fortunately, none of them are in a critical condition. We ask our colleagues to exercise extreme caution to avoid a repetition of accidents like this one. Initial reports indicate that there were 17 students on the bus,” said Altay.
The accident took place on a busy road connecting the suburbs of Yeşilce and Sütlüce on the outskirts of the city of Muş. Turkish authorities have opened an investigation to determine why the train hit the school bus and whether the level crossing warning systems were working properly, in order to clarify the exact causes of the accident.
